Senator George McGovern

Former Senator George McGovern, 90, passed on Sunday morning. Among the hunger activist community, he was well known for his tireless advocacy for ending hunger at home and around the world.  We are ever grateful for his leadership in the 1960s bringing together legislators from both sides of the isle to revolutionize and create nutrition assistance programs including Food Stamp program School Lunch and WIC.  Because of Senator McGovern, Americans have a better opportunity for health and good nutrition.

Senator McGovern’s passing is a sober reminder of how much hunger in America is a political condition and what is possible if we all stand together and make hunger issues a priority.

“Hunger is not just a problem for politicians. We all have an ethical and moral obligation to help people who are suffering,” wrote President Bill Clinton in the foreword to Senator McGovern’s book Ending Hunger Now.  We agree. Our vision for a hunger-free America will take all of us, working together, in spite of our differences.
