While Central Texans Straddle the Hunger Line, Food Supply Declines

“Me and my mother come out quite a bit, you know, to try to help others, and then we try to help others along with what we get,” says Derrick McVae.

Derrick and his mother are the growing face of food pantry clients; those who are supporters of the Food Bank and now find themselves on the other side of the hunger line.

The Food Bank relies on public and private partnerships to ensure Central Texans are nourished every day. Food prices are rising, which means less emergency commodities for food banks to receive through the USDA’s emergency food assistance program, TEFAP.  Today, our shelves are 75% empty.

Our struggling economy means that people are less able to give, right when we need donations the most.   “Individuals who are the backbone of donations have their own challenges so that they may not be responding as strongly as they might have in the past,” says USDA Food and Nutrition Service Under Secretary, Kevin Concannon.

In today’s economy, donors and clients are one in the same.  Client or constituent, we welcome you to raise your voice and Speak Out Against Hunger during Hunger Action Month. Have you been on both sides of the hunger line? Let us know.  Are you able to help with a financial gift?  Donate here.
